Types
of Roofing Materials Used on Steep Sloped Roofs
Asphalt Shingles:
Asphalt shingles are categorized in different ways depending on
their reinforcements and shapes. Asphalt shingles that use organic
reinforcing mats are referred to as "organic-reinforced asphalt
shingles," and those that use glass fiber reinforcing mats
are referred to as "glass-fiber reinforced asphalt shingles."
Clay/Ceramic
Tile: High-quality clay and shale deposits are selected for
mining based on their mineral compositions, which are responsible
for the hardness, durability, and color of the finished product.
The raw material is crushed and ground into fine powder. The materials
are mixed, then the clay is wetted and worked to become a homogeneous
mass of the proper plasticity. The clay is extruded, cut to size,
and formed or pressed into the various shapes and styles of clay
roofing tile.
Concrete
Tile: The majority of the concrete tiles made in North America
are produced in a automated extrusion plant. Semidry concrete
mixes are molded under high pressure to form the tile. Different
additives can be added to enhance the performance of the tiles.
Various colors and shapes can be found to suit your application.
Wood
Shakes and Shingles: The term shake and shingle characterize
the look of the wood roofing unit or piece. A shake typically
has a rough and textured surface, and a shingle's surface is sawn
smooth and flat. Wood shakes are generally thicker in their appearance
than wood shingles.
Slate:
Standard slate roof systems are those roof system composed of
standard commercial slate varing from 3/16 to ¼ inches.
The slate is commonly found in uniform lengths and widths. Slate
can be used to make designs, and is suitable for buildings where
long service life is required.
Synthetic
Roof Components: Beware of synthetic products. There are a
number of synthetic products that have proven to be faulty and
defective.
Metal
Roof Components: These roofs are constructed of metals and
metal alloys. Fabricated metals make up panels and other type
shapes that can be installed as a roof system. Metal roofs are
common in Alpine regions and in aesthetic applications. Metal
roofs generally provide long service lives.
